Members of the NI Cancer Research Consumer Forum (NICRCF) were thrilled to be awarded funding as part of the Macmillan Cancer Support World Cancer Day 2025 ‘Closing the Cancer Care Gap’ initiative.

NICRCF members recognise Personal and Public Involvement (PPI) should support more inclusive research, helping to close the cancer care gap through new approaches to treatment and care that are more accessible and appropriate for everyone who needs them.

Through the project the NICRCF was keen to explore new relationships and a new phase in closing the cancer care gap in the context of cancer research in Northern Ireland. There were four key elements:

  • NICRCF members attended training on Health Inequalities delivered by the Community Development & Health Network
  • A workshop session ‘Cancer Research – The Adolescent and Young Adult Voice: From Impact to Action’ was kindly facilitated as part of the ‘AFTER CANCER: WTF?’ 2025 event
  • A public workshop ‘Your Cancer Care and Cancer Research’ hosted by the NICRCF
  • Follow – on public awareness activity International Clinical Trials Day 2025 – NI Cancer Centre – ‘Research is for Everyone’ activity in collaboration with Belfast Trust Artist in Residence

We are delighted to share the reports of the two workshops:

We are very grateful to all who supported and collaborated in this project and we especially wish to thank the many workshop participants and others who shared their experience and wisdom to help shape more inclusive research across the lifespan and from all communities, of geography, identity and need.  Their contribution has been invaluable and supports further action going forward.

We also wish to thank those who supported the creation of art pieces generated and inspired through the workshops and public engagement as a lasting testament to the thoughts and message of these activities.

It has been a delight to welcome new members to the NICRCF since these workshop activities and if you would like more information on how to join us, please go to ‘Getting Involved’ and the NI Cancer Research Consumer Forum – Get Involved page https://cancertrials.hscni.net/about-us/ni-cancer-research-consumer-forum/get-involved/
